Industrial Mops of Cotton and Cotton Blend Yarns

In the dim and distant past when socket mops were manufactured from cast iron it was clearly understood by distributors and end users alike that a No.12 socket mop weighed 12oz.  This assumption was based on the acceptance that the cast iron socket weighed 4 oz and the yarn made up the remaining weight.

Today, all traditional socket mops are made from either pressed steel or plastic, which has led to manufacturers developing their own interpretation of mop weights and to an increased amount of confusion amongst end users and distributors.

Several differing standards are now in use and understandably the market place is now confused and often frustrated particularly with an increasing number of imported socket and Kentucky mops from Pakistan and Honduras now entering the market with even more confusing weight markings.  Clearly a concerning and potentially damaging situation for the UK cleaning industry.

Against this background the Cleaning and Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) has developed a Manufacturing Standard Accreditation Scheme for mops founded on established practice that a mop number reflects the weight of a mop.  Mops carrying the CHSA Scheme logo are manufactured to the following standard:

The Scheme is monitored by an independent inspector who makes regular visits on participating manufacturers to ensure compliance with the Scheme's standard. 

The Council of CHSA enforces compliance with the right to withdraw use of the Accreditation logo from any company found to be non compliant.
