Need to calculate your carbon footprint in the drive towards Net Zero? Find out how at our webinar

Roadmap to sustainability CHSA

Calculating and reporting carbon emissions is an essential first step in the journey of reducing them, but it can be a complex process. In our webinar, taking place at 11am on Wednesday 2 July via Teams, we are bringing together recognised experts to explain:

  • The implications of Net Zero and the purpose of carbon reporting
  • How to measure and report on carbon emissions
  • Why and how to verify the data

Our panel of experts, who will also answer delegates’ questions, comprises: Andrew Griffiths of Planet Mark, Greg Selfe of Nero and Ryan Stevens of Interface NRM.

Calculating and reporting your carbon emissions matters

Organisations in our sector are committed to cutting their carbon emissions, but it’s not easy. Understanding their emissions in the detail required is complex.

Cutting carbon emissions begins with understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol categorises emissions, based on the different aspects of the business, into these Scopes. Scope 1 comprises direct emissions that result from activities within the organisation’s control. They might be onsite fuel combustion, manufacturing and process emissions, refrigerant losses and company vehicles. Scope 2 comprises indirect emissions from any electricity, heat or steam purchased and used. Scope 3 are any other indirect

This categorisation is clear but how and what to count is not. Our members have many questions: What are the standards for calculating and reporting carbon emissions? Who is responsible for reporting which emissions, particularly when considering distribution? Is the transport of the product from the factory gate to the distributor’s warehouse the responsibility of the manufacturer, the distributor, or both? What is the right methodology for the calculation? How can I trust the carbon reporting of other organisations emissions?
